From all the staff at Silver Birches Senior School, we would like to welcome you and your family to our school. We will do all we can to ensure students have a successful and positive experience during this school year. Silver Birches is a caring school where community partners, staff, parents, neighbours and community agencies work together to provide for the total welfare of our children. We are committed to do our best to fulfill the Near North District School Board’s mission statement “to educate learners to their fullest potential in preparation for life-long learning.”

Because education is a partnership, children learn best when parents support the work of the school. Support can come in many ways such as: attending school functions or volunteering in the school; participating in parent/teacher interviews; talking to your children about their day at school; monitoring homework responsibilities; and ensuring that your children arrive at school nourished, rested and ready to learn.

There have been several changes that have occurred at Silver Birches that you should be aware of. We have had to implement a new phone system over the summer and as a result our new school number is 475-2322. Our web site address has also changed. It can now be accessed at www-sib.nearnorthschools.ca (Please note www-). Our school times have changed slightly. Classes will begin at 9:00 am and we will finish at 3:00 pm. Bus times and home arrival times will not be affected.

One of the new and exciting initiatives at Silver Birches this year is the completion of the long awaited outdoor basketball facility. The courts are scheduled for completion in conjunction with the repairs to our parking lot. Intramural and extracurricular activities will run year round. Students’ Council will be established by late September. Field trips and various excursions have also been planned for the students throughout the year. Please, encourage your child to get involved!

Literacy and numeracy is at the heart of the educational program we deliver. Staff will be participating in new initiatives and professional development that will increase the literacy and numeracy skills of our students. Our resource team will provide the additional supports for those students who require that extra help in specific areas. You will find that we also give significant emphasis to the sciences and the arts. Science fairs and music/drama events are in the plans for this year. A comprehensive Design and Technology program as well as physical education classes provide a wonderful, well-balanced learning experience for your child while attending Silver Birches.

Thank you for entrusting your child's education to us. It is our sincere hope that we can help meet your child's academic, emotional, social, and physical needs not only through the expertise and dedication of our diverse staff, but also through the various programs offered here at Silver Birches. We are looking forward to an exciting year. Come join us!

Sincerely
