Student Council at Silver Birches is comprised
of several members of the student body, some have been
elected, and some have been selected. Student Council
has two groups, the Executive and the Class
Representatives.
Students wishing to join Student Council must
keep in mind that they will be expected to participate
in regular (biweekly) lunch-time meetings. All
positions must be applied for, with students filling out
an official “job” application. Elected positions then
involve the students campaigning, using posters and
speeches, prior to an official election day. Selected
positions are slightly more involved as the students are
given an interview with a panel of staff members, then
chosen as with “real” jobs.
The Executive has twelve members. At the top is
the President, a grade eight student, elected by
his or her fellow eight students. This position has
several duties including being the liaison between the
students and the administrators of the school. The
President chairs all meetings and sets the agendas.
Often the President is called upon to represent the
students at special events involving the school.
Assisting
the President is the Vice-President.
This is a grade seven student, also elected. This
student shadows the President, meeting with
administration, helping with the agendas, and
co-chairing the meetings.
Secretaries
are selected, not elected. There is a grade
seven and a grade eight Secretary, responsible for
creating minutes of the meetings, typing and copying the
minutes, and making sure that each Council member has a
copy of the agenda and minutes in their book.
In charge of the finances are a grade seven and
a grade eight Treasurer. These students are also
selected by the panel. Responsibilities include keeping
records of debits and credits affecting Student Council,
they also suggest amounts available for spending,
request funds for events and handle all money related to
Council. The Treasurers also are in charge of recording
and updating House Points.
Events
in the school have been planned, most often, by
the Social Conveners. These elected students are
in charge of planning, organizing and running music for
school dances, fundraisers, and some spirit days. In
the fall, the social conveners are instrumental in
planning the Fall Fun Day for incoming and returning
students.
The final pair of students on the Executive are
the Community Liaison students. Again, these
members are a grade seven and a grade eight student,
selected by the panel. This pair is responsible for
events taking place outside the school or involving
members of the community. Highlights of this position
have been having members of the North Bay Police Service
to the school to play volleyball against our teams, as
well as presenting various community groups (the Humane
Society, Food Bank etc.) with money raised by students
The Class Representative group also has twelve
members. This group of students is elected, one from
each class, to act as the liaison between Council and
the students. Class Reps are responsible for keeping
their class informed about events that are coming up,
and pumping their classmates up about spirit days. In
the 2004-2005 school year, Class Reps became responsible
for planning and presenting a “Character Education”
activity and bulletin board.
As
representatives of the Silver Birches student body,
Council members are expected to maintain their academics
and act as positive role models. |
